2025 Elder Candidates

The elders are excited to present three new candidates for elder - Aaron Bucy, Nathan Murray, and Derek Overcash.

Having been nominated by a member of our congregation, each of these candidates has completed a thorough application and assessment process. Our current elders, alongside our staff, believe that each candidate is qualified to serve us as an elder. In April, Aaron and Nathan joined our elder team as “elder candidates” - non-voting members of the elder team. They have spent the last months assisting the elders in our shepherding work while giving us an opportunity to observe their lives and work more directly. (Derek served as an elder at Life Church from 2018-2024. Because of this previous and recent experience on our team, the elders elected to forego such a candidacy period with Derek.)

At our covenant member meeting on August 10, we will ask the congregation to affirm fully each of these men as elders.

  • A member of Life Church since 2020, Aaron Bucy (37) and his wife Kelly have four children: Merritt (10), Abel (8), Harper (6), and Levi (3). Aaron serves on our staff as our worship arts director and communications director, overseeing our worship gatherings, worship and tech teams, as well as our communications (social media, weekly emails, etc.).

Growing up with parents that loved the Lord and his Church, Aaron and his brothers volunteered early and often in their local churches growing up. Aaron and Kelly met serving as a part of a church plant before marrying and moving to Nashville. While working in the music industry, Aaron and Kelly had the chance to move to Liverpool, UK, to serve a network of churches. (Aaron led worship, while Kelly worked with victims of human trafficking.) As their family grew, they returned to the Carolinas to be closer to their extended families.

Our elders and staff appreciate Aaron’s broad range of gifts, spiritual and theological maturity, as well as his sharp sense of humor. Aaron thinks deeply about matters of spiritual formation and applied theology. Since joining our staff in December 2020, he has become an integral voice helping shape who we are as a church, and who we are becoming.

  • Nathan Murray (52) and his wife Angela have been members of Life Church since 2023; they have five adult children. Nathan works as a biblical counselor, focusing especially on marriage and family counseling.

The Murrays were part of Life Church from our beginning. Nathan has served us as an elder previously, prior to leaving in 2018 to pursue other ministry opportunities. In the Lord’s providence and kindness, the Murrays have returned, eager to serve us again. Nathan and Angela lead a Life Group together, as well as serving faithfully on our Care Team. Our elders appreciate Nathan’s zeal for the Lord, pastoral gifts and instincts, as well as his humble, servant-like nature.

In his spare time, Nathan enjoys college football and basketball, time on the beach with Angela, a good book, and good coffee.

  • Derek Overcash (39) and his wife Heather have been members of Life Church since 2015. Derek works for Innospec in Salisbury; the Overcashes have three delightful children: Maddie (12), Emma (9), and Greyson (6).

Together, Derek and Heather lead a Life Group. They both serve faithfully in Life Kids - Derek usually leads the 4th and 5th grade group in the Clubhouse. Heather also serves on our missions team. Our elders and staff appreciate the Overcashes’ deep and faithful investment in our church. Derek is a tender shepherd and a persistent voice of encouragement; we can’t wait for him to rejoin our team.

In his spare time, Derek loves being active outdoors, working in his yard, playing outdoor sports, and playing with his children and dog. He enjoys traveling and spending quality time with his family.

New Testament churches are to be led by a team of biblically-qualified spiritual shepherds. The Bible calls these shepherds pastors, overseers, and elders at various points. (See, for example, Titus 1:5-9; 1 Peter 5:1-4; Acts 20:28.) At Life Church we seek to order ourselves according to this biblical pattern, and thus we are led by a group of shepherds - a team that includes staff pastors as well as our lay elders. These elders have been found to demonstrate the biblical qualifications outlined for elders in passages such as 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9.

If you have any questions about our assessment process or any of these candidates, please contact one of our current elders using the link below. Per our bylaws, if you are aware of any reason why any of these brothers should not serve us in this way, please inform the current elders immediately.
