Ministry Role & Responsibilities
Chris has been part of the Life Church family since 2013. As Lead Pastor, Chris is primarily responsible for the oversight of our preaching/teaching ministry, vision-casting, strategic planning, leading and development of leaders, community-engagement and the building and nurturing of collaborative partnerships in our community and abroad that serve to advance God’s Kingdom and bring glory to the name of Jesus through the work of the Gospel. Chris serves alongside the Elders as an ex officio member of our Elder Team.
Chris’s heart is to see the church be the church by being missionally active as agents of grace, healing and reconciliation. Much of his passion is driven by the centrality of discipleship and seeing people redeemed and developed into their full, God-given potential.
Chris was licensed and ordained into ministry in 2001, having served on staff with several different churches across North Carolina as a church-planter, associate pastor and youth and college pastor. Prior to Life Church, Chris served as the Carolinas Regional Manager for Operation Christmas Child - a project of the international relief organization, Samaritan’s Purse. He is a graduate of Appalachian State University (1999) and has studied at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.
Chris and his wife Molly were married in 2002, and are the proud parents of four children - Julia, Elisha, Ezekiel (Zeke) and Jonas. The Shelton’s love their faith family. “It is so great to be part of a church that I would choose to attend if I weren’t on staff,” says Chris. The Shelton’s are also proud to call Salisbury home, where they are active in the local community.
For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7
As a native North Carolinian, Chris takes pride in the state he calls home. He’s always more than happy to share random trivia and may even recite the North Carolina State Toast if you ask him nicely!
